Retrieving Your WiFi Network Password

With the advent of laptops and smart phones, wired internet is fast becoming a thing of the past. While it has not become obsolete completely, the widespread usage of Wi-Fi networks and the improvement in Wi-Fi technology has made it the de facto mode of internet connectivity in most homes and offices today. In fact, windows also provides you with the option of creating an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network with internet connection sharing (ICS) enabled in order to use a wired connection with a desktop / laptop as a Wi-Fi router in order to connect other machines to the internet. This provides you the flexibility of networking all your machines as well as doing away with wires and enjoying wireless connectivity.

One of the commonly faced problems while trying to get more computers onto the same network is that the password to the network has been misplaced and you do not know how to retrieve the password. Wi-Fi networks provide you with the option of encrypting the network with a WPA (Wi-FI Protected Access) or a WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) key.

Follow the below steps in order to retrieve the Wi-Fi Network’s Key

1. Navigate to the Control Panel by clicking on Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet

image

2. Click on Network & Sharing Center. Alternatively you can also open the Network & Sharing Center by right clicking your network (LAN) icon and choosing Open Network & Sharing Center. Then click on View network status and tasks.

image

3. Click on Manage Wireless Networks in the left menu

image

4. Right Click the required wireless network and select Properties

image

5. Click on the Security Tab

6. In the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, click on Show Characters to reveal the password

image

Note: The icon next to the reveal password option indicates that this option is only enabled for users who have Administrator level access. If you are a user with limited rights/privileges or a Guest user, then you will not be able to see the network password.

The above steps are designed to retrieve a lost password and not in order to obtain unauthorized access to a Wi-Fi network.

Using Above Approach to Modify a Network Password

This same sequence of steps can be performed to modify the existing password of a wireless network. For better security, use stronger passwords with a combination of upper and lower case alphabets as well as numbers and special characters. This will protect your network from unauthorized entry / access and ensure that all the devices on the network are from trusted parties only.

Keep your PC clean with Microsoft Security Essentials

Most people are pretty carefree when it comes to buying security programs like anti-virus or firewalls. It’s not until something drastic happens that we realize the value of these little utilities. Though a large number of users rely on the inbuilt options in windows, the general consensus is that they leave a lot to be desired and cannot be trusted completely.
Well, Not anymore. Ever since Microsoft released Microsoft Security essentials, that scenario has changed. This wonderful freebie not only protects you against viruses, spyware and Malware, it works quietly in the background and  doesn’t slow down your system at all, unlike most of the other popular anti-virus programs.
The security suite is integrated into the operating system and as a result it’s able to function in the background without hogging system resources and hindering any work that’s going on in the foreground. As per various tests conducted online, it’s able to detect and remove 99% of all  threats in various virus and spyware forms. This performance is not only impressive but a huge upgrade over what Microsoft had to offer previously.

Checking Internet Connection Speed

Go to Speedtest.net and click the large Begin Test button. The tool requires Adobe Flash player to be preinstalled on your browser. If you don’t have the Flash player, you can download it here.

Once you click on Begin Test, the site will start “pinging” your ISP and try to guess the approximate download and upload speed of your internet connection.

When the tests are running, you will see the meter going up or down frequently. Do not close the browser window yet, it should take around 20 seconds to complete.
When the speed test is complete, you will be shown the results of the test, as shown below:

To arrive at a conclusion, it would be wise to perform the same checks multiple times and note the upload and download speeds on paper after each test. After 5-6 iterations, compute the average and determine the approximate speed that your Internet service provider is providing.
Notes:
The speeds will vary for the same ISP if you are using a Wi-Fi connection, a router dongle or a broadband ADSL modem on LAN. It’s advised to stick to a wired connection (e.g Broadband ADSL) for best results.
If your download speed is lower than 0.2 MBPS, your connection can be termed as “Slow”. With this speed, watching YouTube videos or downloading large files (e.g torrents, movies) will take days to complete.
The connection speeds will vary during different times of the day. For example: running the tests during “peak hours” will show less speed when compared to running the same tests during night or “low traffic” hours. You should perform the tests multiple times a day and note down the results

MS Office 2010: Resize and Rotate Pictures With Your Keyboard

Looking to change the size of a picture, Clip Art or drawing shape that you’ve inserted into an Office 2010 file? Maybe you’re looking to increase the size of one element in your SmartArt?
It’s a bit of a pain… select the object, be sure to slowly move the mouse pointer over a corner or side handle so you can click, hold and drag to the new size at just the right moment (when the cursor turns into a double-sided arrow).
Or… what about when you want to rotate one of these things? Now we’ve got to be sure to grab the little green handle since anything else will re-size it instead of rotating it.
If you hate all that handle holding then you might want to give these quick key combinations a try.
For any of this to work you’ll need to select the object. (If you’re working with a text box be sure to select the text box and not click into it to edit text.)
Shift + Arrow key will re-size your shape or picture.
  • I found that the up and down keys will increase and decrease the height of the object and the left / right keys control the width.
  • For a picture that had the aspect ratio locked the height and width moved together keeping the re-sizing process from distorting the picture.
Alt + Left / Right Arrow keys will rotate the shape or picture in 15 degree increments.
Earth shattering key combinations to cut our workload in half?
No.
Useful tricks in the never-ending quest to use the mouse less and the keyboard more?

Adjusting Line Spacing in Word 2007

If you’ve just opened a document, under the Home tab of the ribbon at the top of the page, in the Paragraph section, you can find a button that controls line and paragraph spacing (hover your cursor over the buttons and a balloon will pop up telling you what each one does).

Click on the Line spacing button, check 1.0, and click Remove space after paragraph.

That will remove all the added spaces. If you’ve already started your document, you’ll have to select all the text (Ctrl+A) or just select the text you’d like to adjust.
You can also change the default settings, so that all future documents open with these settings. Still under the Home tab, click the arrow in the lower right corner of the Styles section. This will open the Styles dialog box.

Click the Manage Styles button at the bottom (way at the bottom).

In the Manage Styles dialog box, under the Set Defaults tab, font style and size can be changed, along with paragraphs, and line spacing. I chose to change the font to Arial at 11 points. The spacing was adjusted to single spacing in the drop down list, with spacing set at 1.

To save this for future documents, click the radio button beside New documents based on this template and click OK.

Converting Images to Text

Converting Images to Text

Today, everything seems to be about speed. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to accomplish the multitude of tasks that make up our daily lives. As such, anything that can reduce the time spent performing repetitive tasks such as typing is more than welcomed.

There are quite a few alternatives to typing, such as voice recognition, but none offer more benefits than OCR software. OCR (optical character recognition) is the process of converting scanned documents and image files into fully editable text. It’s capable of accomplishing this by analyzing a document and comparing it to fonts stored in its database. It can also guess unrecognized characters by comparing different character features.

The technology for text recognition has grown immensely in just a few years and it’s now capable of recognizing any type of text (even handwritten text). Despite this, 100% accuracy for OCR software remains impossible with today’s technology.

Depending on the resolution and contrast of the scanned document and the precision of the software, you will receive text that’s about 80% – 90% accurate. Also, minor errors like missing letters or misspelling will occur even with the best text recognition software.

Still, unless you’re a fast typist, the amount of time that you’ll need to correct a few misspelled words is nowhere near the amount of time it takes to type a document manually.

While there are many software options for text recognition, their performance and accuracy varies wildly based on the OCR engine they use. One of the most accurate open source OCR engines is the Tesseract engine.

FreeOCR is a free application that provides a simple graphical interface for the Tesseract engine. Besides it’s simple interface, FreeOCR supports most image files and PDF documents and is compatible with most scanning devices.

You can download FreeOCR here.

After saving the freeocr.exe file on your computer, double-click on it and follow the instructions to install the application.

With the application installed, go to the desktop and double-click on its shortcut to open FreeOCR.

The interface is split into two windows to make the OCR process easy to understand. On the left, you can see the imported image, while on the right the extracted text is displayed.

image

You have three options for importing files into the application.

image

If you click the Scan button, your scanner interface will start and you’ll be able to scan your documents directly into the program.

Clicking the Open button allows you to select any image file on your computer and extract the text from it. The Open PDF button will do the same for PDF files.

Once you import an image file though one of these options, all you have to do is click the OCR button. This will start the OCR process. For best results, use an image that has a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

After the conversion is complete, the text in the right window is fully editable. You can correct any errors right there. Once you’re satisfied with the results, click the blue W icon in the middle to export the text into Microsoft Word. Alternatively, click the button above it to transfer all the text to the clipboard.

By default, FreeOCR comes equipped to recognize text written in the English language. If you need to convert text for another language, you will have to install it separately.

To download extra language files for FreeOCR, click here.

Download the language file and save it on your computer. Since the archives belong to the tar.gz format, you will need an archive manager like 7-Zip to extract the files.

Now, open FreeOCR, click on Settings and then click the Open Language Folder button. This will open the tessdata folder. Copy the extracted language file to this folder and restart the OCR software.

You can now change the language from the OCR Language dropdown menu.

OCR technology has yet to mature, but it can still increase your productivity while at the computer.

Regular PC Maintenance Tips

1. Run Maintenance Tasks: A good place to start is with the built-in tools that Windows has for cleaning up your system. In Vista and Windows 7 you can run maintenance tasks to do just this. In Windows 7 click Start > Control Panel > Find and Fix Problems.

Now click Run maintenance tasks under the System and Security submenu.

Click Next on the following screen and Windows will start scanning your computer for any disc errors, missing shortcuts, and other such oddities. By default, it will autofix these errors unless it requires any additional actions by the user, such as a reboot.

2. Disk Cleanup: As Windows goes through its daily business, it creates and stores a lot of junk files, temporary files, thumbnails and other such things that over time will take up space and slow down your computer. Clean them up with the Windows Disk Cleanup tool. You can find it by going to the Start menu, clicking All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. You can also access Disk Cleanup by holding the Windows key and hitting the R key (Win+R). In the Run box that appears, type cleanmgr. Once you run this handy tool, Windows will look to see how much free space it can clean up for you and present its findings for you in a short report, (see below).

Another great free tool that achieves promises to find all the same files, and more, is the excellent CCleaner from Piriform.

3. Clean the Registry: The files stored in the Windows registry also need cleaning up from time to time, so maintaining a clean and organized registry is an important part of keeping your computer running smoothly. Take a look at the Registry Cleaner in the Worldstart Store, or try the Wise Registry Cleaner and your computer’s registry will soon be optimized for all the work it needs to do.

4. Defragment: When you defragment your hard drive you are asking Windows to reorganize the contents of drive so that it uses less space and stores files more efficiently. This can speed up your computer and help your programs to run more smoothly. XP, Vista, and Windows 7 have built-in defragmentation tools and you can access them by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. In Vista and Windows 7, you can also access the Disk Defragmenter through Run (Win+R). In the Run box that appears, type dfrgui

To see if your hard drive is in need of defragmenting, click Analyze disk and Windows will run a short diagnostic scan. Once it is finished scanning the disk, you will see how fragmented it is in terms of a percentage, (with 0% being the optimal score). Anything over 5% is probably worth defragmenting. You can even set up a schedule so that Windows does all the hard work for you. Simply click Configure schedule to set up a time that suits you.

5. Windows Update: The various patches and updates that Microsoft releases for its operating systems are intended to improve security and performance. As such, it is important to keep up to date with as many of these as you can. Most PCs are configured to do this automatically, but you can do a manual check for updates at any time by going to the Start menu, clicking All Programs, and then selecting Windows Update.

Click Check for Updates on the left hand side of the window to see what is available for your computer. To set up a schedule that will download and install updates for you, click Change settings and tweak the preferences to your liking.

6. Spyware/Antivirus Scans: The last sure fire way of making sure your computer is in the best shape it can be is to check that you are up to date with antivirus and spyware scans. Malware is a common problem today and something that will definitely stop your PC from operating at its peak performance. However, there are a plethora of great software solutions out there that can clean your computer quickly and efficiently. A full list of compatible products can be found if you read this amazing Worldstart article by Lori Cline.

While this might seem like a long list of tasks to complete, many of them are quick to accomplish, and others can be scheduled to run automatically in the background. Together, they are a great way to make sure that your PC is all it can be. Good luck with your maintenance!

Laptop Recalibration

As a laptop gets older, it starts to slow down a little. You may notice that pages load slower, videos take longer to start playing, and general slowness of the machine. Unfortunately, thousands of people a year replace their laptop batteries without performing any monthly recalibration on it at all. If you want to get the best performance out of your laptop, here are a few steps to follow.

- Charge your laptop’s battery all the way to 100%.

-Once the laptop is fully charged, unplug it and let the battery drain. Feel free to use the laptop during this period, as it will help it drain more quickly. Once you see that the battery is almost empty, save your work and close any open pages. Then let the laptop shut itself off.

-Let the dead battery sit for about 5 or 6 hours, or overnight. This will help eliminate any leftover charge the battery may have, and lets the battery start over from zero.

-After you’ve let your laptop sit, plug it back in and let it charge all the way to 100% before using it again.
Battery maintenance is an important process that many people neglect. Recalibration should be done monthly if possible to ensure best results. If done on a regular basis, you should notice greatly extended battery life on your computer, and hopefully postpone the purchase of any replacement parts.

How To Improve Computer Speed

• When the computer is running more slowly than usual, a virus may be the problem. Too many programs may be open at one time. It is good to clear the unnecessary programs occasionally. They represent clutter to your computer. It is comparable to you having too many papers or files on your desk. So much data is stored in your computer when you surf the Internet. Installing another free program, called CCleaner, is a good way to clean your computer at the end of each day. A registry cleaner is provided with this program. Registry problems can create many kinks in your computer and will cause it to slow down.

If you Lost your Computer Drive then "What will be you do" ?
